Dubrovnik est très sûre pour les touristes. La Vieille Ville fortifiée, le front de mer et toutes les principales attractions sont sûrs à tout moment. La Croatie affiche un taux de criminalité très faible.
2–3 jours suffisent pour faire le tour des remparts, explorer la Vieille Ville, prendre le téléphérique jusqu'au mont Srđ, visiter les îles voisines de Lokrum ou Élaphiti et profiter de la mer Adriatique.
Mai–juin et septembre–octobre sont idéaux : climat parfait, eaux chaudes et bien moins de touristes qu'en juillet–août. Évitez l'été si possible ; la Vieille Ville est envahie par les croisiéristes. L'hiver est calme mais charmant.
La Vieille Ville est entièrement agréable à pied (sans voitures). Les bus publics relient le centre aux plages et à l'aéroport. Des ferries et catamarans partent du port vers les îles proches, le Monténégro ou l'Albanie.
Les remparts de la Vieille Ville (vues sur la mer Adriatique), le Stradun (rue principale), le Fort Lovrijenac, le mont Srđ en téléphérique, l'île de Lokrum et les plages de Banje et Lapad sont des expériences incontournables.
Oui, la popularité de Game of Thrones (tournée ici comme Westeros) a considérablement boosté le tourisme. La haute saison (juillet–août) peut être très éprouvante. Visitez tôt le matin pour profiter de la Vieille Ville sans foule ou choisissez le printemps/automne.
