La Zone Hôtelière de Cancún est très sûre pour les touristes avec une forte présence policière. Le centre-ville (Ciudad Cancún) demande plus de prudence. Suivez les conseils de votre hôtel, évitez les zones inconnues la nuit et utilisez des taxis agréés.
5–7 jours sont idéaux : 2–3 jours à Cancún et ses plages, 1 jour à Chichen Itzá, 1 jour à Tulum (ruines mayas et cénotes), 1 jour à Playa del Carmen et un jour pour la plongée en apnée dans le récif corallien ou une excursion à Isla Mujeres.
Décembre–avril est la saison sèche et la plus agréable (24–30°C). Évitez août–octobre (saison des ouragans). La saison des pluies (mai–novembre) affiche des prix plus bas mais un risque accru de tempêtes tropicales.
Les cénotes du Yucatán sont une expérience unique. Les plus accessibles depuis Cancún sont ceux d'Ik Kil (près de Chichen Itzá), Dos Ojos, Gran Cénote et Cénote Azul (près de Tulum). Des excursions organisées depuis Cancún permettent d'en visiter plusieurs en une journée.
Les plages de la Zone Hôtelière, Chichen Itzá (Patrimoine UNESCO et Merveille du Monde), Tulum (ruines mayas sur la mer), les cénotes du Yucatán, Isla Mujeres (en ferry) et Playa del Carmen sont incontournables.
Non, il n'est pas recommandé de boire l'eau du robinet à Cancún ni nulle part au Mexique. Buvez toujours de l'eau en bouteille ou purifiée. Les hôtels fournissent généralement de l'eau potable. La glace dans les restaurants d'hôtels et les établissements touristiques est habituellement sûre.
