May to September is the dry season with cooler temperatures (20–28°C). Carnival in February is spectacular but very crowded and expensive. Avoid January–March if you dislike humidity and rain.
Tourist areas like Copacabana, Ipanema and Santa Teresa are generally safe during daylight. Avoid favelas unless on an official guided tour, and never flash expensive items. Stay vigilant at night.
Budget travellers can get by on R$150–200/day ($30–40). Mid-range is R$300–500/day. Beachfront restaurants and tourist spots are pricier — opt for local juice bars and padarias for cheap, delicious food.
Many nationalities including EU, UK, Canada and Australia are visa-free for up to 90 days. US citizens also enjoy visa-free access since 2024. Always check the latest requirements at gov.br.
The metro covers Ipanema, Copacabana and the city centre efficiently. Uber is cheap, reliable and far safer than street taxis. Avoid unlicensed taxis, especially at night.
