FAQ
Baku is generally very safe for tourists. The city has a low crime rate and locals are welcoming toward visitors. The Old City and main tourist areas are well-lit and patrolled. As always, stay aware of your belongings in crowded markets and avoid poorly lit backstreets at night.
Most nationalities can obtain an e-Visa online before arrival (evisa.gov.az) or a visa on arrival at Heydar Aliyev Airport. The standard tourist visa allows a 30-day stay. Citizens of some countries (Turkey, Russia, Georgia and others) may enter visa-free — check the official portal for your passport.
The local currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (₼). Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and major shops in the city center and Old City. However, smaller local teahouses, bazaars, and taxis often prefer cash. It is recommended to carry some manat for day-to-day expenses.
April to June and September to October offer the most pleasant weather — warm days, cool evenings, and fewer tourists. July and August can be very hot (35°C+) and windy. Winter (December–February) is mild but grey. Spring is ideal for exploring the Old City and the Boulevard on foot.
The walled Old City (İçərişəhər) with the Maiden Tower and Palace of Shirvanshahs is an absolute must. The Flame Towers dominate the skyline and are especially stunning at night. The seaside Boulevard, Heydar Aliyev Center (designed by Zaha Hadid), Ateshgah Fire Temple, and Yanar Dag (burning mountain) are also highlights no visitor should miss.
The Baku Metro is cheap (₼0.40/trip) and covers the city center well — the Red and Green lines connect most tourist areas. Bolt and local taxis are affordable and reliable for short trips. The Old City and Boulevard are best explored on foot. Renting a car is an option for day trips to Gobustan or Ateshgah.
