Get a 72-hour Tokyo Subway Pass — it pays for itself in 2 days. Best ramen is NOT in Shinjuku tourist spots; try the tiny shops in Ebisu or Ogikubo

FAQ
The best time to visit Tokyo is during spring (March to May) for cherry blossom season, or autumn (October to November) for stunning foliage. These periods offer mild weather and iconic scenery. Summer is hot and humid, while winter is cold but great for fewer crowds and illumination events.
From Narita Airport, the Narita Express (NEX) takes about 60 minutes to Tokyo Station and costs around ¥3,250. The Skyliner to Ueno takes 36 minutes. From Haneda Airport, the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho takes 13 minutes, or the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in about 15 minutes.
Tokyo has one of the world's best public transit systems. Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card for seamless travel across JR lines, Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, and buses. The metro runs from roughly 5:00 AM to midnight. A 24-hour Tokyo Metro pass costs ¥600.
Budget travelers can manage on ¥8,000–12,000 ($55–80) per day using hostels, convenience store meals, and public transit. Mid-range travelers should expect ¥15,000–25,000 ($100–170) per day. Tokyo offers exceptional value for food — world-class ramen for ¥900 and Michelin-starred sushi from ¥4,000 at lunch.
Tokyo is very navigable without Japanese. Train stations have English signage, announcements are bilingual, and Google Translate's camera feature works great for menus and signs. Learning basic phrases like sumimasen (excuse me) and arigatou (thank you) is appreciated but not essential.
Don't miss Shibuya for the iconic crossing, Shinjuku for nightlife and the free observation deck, Asakusa for the historic Senso-ji temple, Akihabara for anime culture, Harajuku for street fashion, and Tsukiji Outer Market for incredible street food.
