Le Quartier français et le Garden District sont relativement sûrs pour les touristes de jour comme de nuit. En dehors de ces zones, la criminalité peut être plus élevée. Évitez de vous promener seul la nuit dans des quartiers inconnus, utilisez Uber et soyez vigilant avec vos affaires sur Bourbon Street.
3–4 jours sont idéaux pour explorer le Quartier français, le Garden District avec ses demeures, le cimetière de Lafayette, le Bayou en kayak, le Marigny avec du jazz en direct et la gastronomie cajun et créole qui a rendu la ville célèbre.
Février–mai est la meilleure période avec des températures agréables (15–25°C). Le Mardi Gras (février/mars) est la célébration la plus célèbre mais très fréquentée. Le Mardi Gras se fête en février ou en mars (selon le calendrier liturgique), culminant le mardi avant le Mercredi des Cendres.
