FAQ
December–March and July–August have the lowest rainfall. The famous Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival) is in August — the city's most colourful celebration. Medellín is pleasant year-round at 22°C average.
Medellín has undergone a remarkable transformation and is far safer than its 1990s reputation suggests. El Poblado and Laureles are very safe for tourists. Use common sense, avoid displaying valuables and use Uber or InDriver at night.
Budget travellers can manage $30–50/day including accommodation. Mid-range is $60–100/day. A local set lunch (menú del día) costs around $3–5 and is the best value meal you'll find.
Most nationalities including EU, UK, USA, Canada and Australia get a 90-day visa-free stamp on arrival, extendable to 180 days. Check Colombia's Migración website for the latest requirements.
The Metro system is excellent, cheap (~COP$3,000/ride) and safe. The Metrocable connects hillside comunas. Uber and InDriver are widely used and cheaper than taxis. The metro alone covers most tourist areas.
A walking tour of Comuna 13, the Botero sculptures in Plaza Botero, a ride on the Metrocable to Santo Domingo Savio, a traditional bandeja paisa meal, and a day trip to the coffee region (Salento).
